110 golf courses in Andalusia!

If the Golf Club invites you to Andalusia, it is for a very simple reason. This Spanish region is the golf destination.

Bathed by the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, Andalusia has more than 110 courses, 70 of which are on the Costa del Sol alone, which runs roughly from Malaga to Valderrama.

52,000 people work in this tourist golf sector, which brings almost 250 million euros a year to Andalusia.

This shows the importance of the infrastructures and their quality appreciated by mainly European golfers.

LeClub Golf from east to west

Here are a few pointers to help you prepare for your trip from east to west:

ALMERIA

A border region with Murcia, on the Mediterranean coast, where Europe’s only semi-arid desert is located. Almeria is world famous for having been the location for many Hollywood films: Lawrence of Arabia, Cleopatra, The Good Brut and the Mobster, Patton, Conan the Barbarian, Indiana Jones, Exodus, Blade Runner 2049 etc.

As the pictures show, the climate is therefore fantastic. A very pleasant year-round destination on the Mediterranean coast.

The golf courses of Almeria :

Golf Marina Mojacar (managed by UGOLF Iberia). Mojacar is one of the most beautiful villages in Spain: perched on a ledge, it offers a fantastic view of the coastline and the sea.

Golf La Envia, the closest golf course to the city of Almeria in an oasis of greenery, with a magnificent 5-star hotel that offers one of the largest spas in Spain. In the shade of palm trees, pitacos and native bushes, La Envia is undoubtedly an idyllic place to relax and enjoy nature.

Golf Playa Serena: close to the sea, this is one of the main member golf courses in the region. A very pleasant course whose difficulty lies in its long fairways and the design of its greens. A generous native vegetation predominates the course country.

To visit :

The Alcazaba of Almeria, built in 995 by Abderraman III, in excellent state of conservation, the cathedral of Almeria, the desert of Tabernas (location of many western movies), the villages of Mojacar, Nijar, Guadix.

MALAGA and the Costa del Sol :

One of the main coastal cities of Andalusia with one of the most important airports in Spain. The coastline from Malaga to Gibraltar (about 140 km) could be compared to our Côte d’Azur. Benefit of an extremely mild climate all year round, one of the most touristic regions of Andalusia.

Places of interest: the Picasso Museum (the painter was born here in 1881), the Alcazaba (a fortress built during the Arab occupation), the Cathedral, Calle Larios (the most commercially important street in Málaga) and so on.

This region is also known as the Sun Coast (Costa del Sol) and the Golf Coast (Costa del Golf) with more than 70 golf courses. Here are the main courses

Malaga East :

Golf de Baviera, recently renovated, very pleasant design to play with beautiful sea views. Baviera Golf is located in the foothills of the Sierra de la Almijara (east of Málaga), with a microclimate ideal for golf. The golf club is just 500 metres from Caleta de Vélez, known for its marina and its beautiful beaches, which are among the best on the Costa del Sol, along with Nerja and Torre del Mar.

Golf de Añoreta, members’ golf course, very nice clubhouse with a good kitchen. You will take out the camera at the 7th hole which offers a spectacular view of the sea, as well as at the 17th hole, a par 3 with a large lake all around. Añoreta Golf is only a few minutes away from Malaga airport. Please note that suitable lighting allows you to play at night.

Malaga :

Miguel Angel Jimenez Academy: designed by Miguel Angel Jimenez, certainly the most challenging 9 par 3 in Spain, a very good level of maintenance, excellent quality greens. Hole 7 is a replica of hole 12 of the Augusta National (Master) course.

Malaga – Mijas :

Chaparral Golf Club: between the mountains and the sea, a pleasant course that sometimes gives the impression of playing in Switzerland, surrounded by fir trees. It is the only course on the Costa del Sol with 6 par 5, 6 par 4 and 6 par 3. Chaparral is not excessively long (5,800 metres) and has a wide variety of holes that will delight players of all levels.

Cabopino Golf Marbella: also a very pleasant course with beautiful sea views.

Marbella :

Royal Golf Club of Guadalmina South and North, one of the most important golf courses in Marbella (2,000 members) of more than 30 nationalities.

The south is one of the best designs in Marbella, home of the 2020 Spanish Women’s Open and other numerous tournaments. Sean Connery was a member.

To see : The old town of Marbella, Puerto Bañus: the most important marina in the area, the White Villages, including Ronda, Ojen, Mijas, Frigiliana, Grazalema…

CADIX :

Perhaps the most authentic Andalusian region. The old town of Cadiz is emblematic and unmissable, and Jerez, whose vermouth and Sherry cellars and the Royal Andalusian Equestrian School are known the world over.

Don’t miss: Vejer, Sanlucar de Barrameda, Medina sindonia.

The Golf courses :

Chiclana – Vejer :

Fairplay Benalup: in the interior, a beautiful and very well-kept course, a magnificent 5* hotel in a very quiet area in the middle of nature, total anti-stress.

Dehesa de Montenmedio, near Barbate, in the middle of a cork oak property, beautiful surroundings. In this 500-hectare property you can observe an enormous variety of wildlife while playing golf or simply walking around the charming 4-star hotel located 10 mns from the most beautiful beaches of the province of Cadiz: Zahara de los Atunes, Barbate, Conil or La Barrosa de Sancti Petri.

Royal Iberostar Novo Sancti Petri: 36 holes – designed by the mythical Seve Ballesteros – by the sea, 2 hotels of 4 and 5 stars. The first course of the master, and perhaps his masterpiece.

Golf La Estancia: flat, very pleasant and varied course. The prevailing winds coming from the sea require a different playing strategy every day! The lakes and rivers also form an important part of the game.
La Estancia is also the natural habitat of more than 25 species of birds that accompany the player on the course.

Golf Sancti Petri Hills: technical course designed by the double world champion Manuel Piñero. A “must play” in Andalusia. A fairly technical but fun course. At a crossroads of the roads of Andalusia.

Jerez- Rota :

Costa Ballena Ocean Golf Club: designed by José Maria Olazabal (winner of 2 masters and partner of Seve in the Ryder Cup): 27 holes + 9 holes par 3, one of the best practice areas. With 2 4-star hotels: Barcelo and Elba.

Sherry golf: golf of members of the city of Jerez, pleasant and varied design

Barcelo Montecastillo: designed by Nicklaus, seat of 5 tournaments of the excellent European Volvo Master circuit. 5 star hotel and renowned course! Located in the heart of the main wine region of Jerez, and not far from its famous motor racing circuit.

Villanueva Golf & Croquet: a very pleasant, flat course halfway between the Chiclana and Jerez courses.

SEVILLA :

Seville is one of the most beautiful cities in Andalusia: the Plaza de España, the Cathedral, the Alcázar, the Santa Cruz district, the Giralda… Allow time to visit all the treasures of this city.

The golf courses :

Club Hato Verde (managed by UGolf Iberia): 15 minutes from Seville in the direction of Merida, designed by Manuel Piñero (idem Sancti Petri Hills), short, well-modelled, technical and flat course. Pleasant to play.

Royal Club Sevilla Golf: 5 min. from Seville, one of the most beautiful golf courses in Spain, designed by José Maria Olazabal. It hosted the World Cup in 2004 and many times the Spanish and Andalusian Open, a must.

HUELVA :

30 km from Portugal, Huelva is considered the Spanish Algarve.

Golf el Rompido: 36-hole course in a fishing village. A site internationally recognised as a leading golf destination.

On the golf course, a 5-star hotel and an aparthotel offer all desired combinations in terms of accommodation.

The local gastronomy is excellent, especially the fish, especially the white prawns (large shrimp), bass, sea bream… And of course the Ibérico de Jabugo Ham (30-40 min. in the Huelva sierra).

What to do outside of golf?

What to do in Andalusia? There is so much to do in this land, full of history, with a very diverse nature, often with high mountains (Sierra Nevada, for example), wild coves with postcard beaches, generous agricultural plains, cultural places of worldwide renown, small white villages nestled among pine and orange trees, fishing ports that are still active, rivers flowing gently into the nearby sea, noisy cafés where flamenco is used as a religion…

This region, the largest in Spain, offers a wide variety of faces to the passing visitor. And a trip will not be enough to reveal the often little-known sides of this region when you leave the sometimes overcrowded tourist coasts.

The gastronomy linked to the fresh products of the sea and the generous land will delight the most demanding.
